Originally named Charlottetowne, Charlotte is the largest metropolitan area in North Caroline. The name was changed to Charlotte in 1762 to honor Charlotte Sophia, Queen of England. First settled in 1755, Charlotte was the location of the first gold rush in the United States in the 1800s and continued to attract people after the Civil War as a railroad hub and cotton-processing center. The Charlotte metropolitan area is now home to over 1.7 million people and is the second largest banking center in the country. In addition, Charlotte’s subtropical climate makes the city an ideal year-round vacation destination.
Whether wanting to step into the past or race into the future, Charlotte has something to offer all visitors. Known as Charlotte’s “best kept secret”, historic Rosedale Plantation offers visitors a glimpse into the Old South lifestyle. Racing enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the NHRA dragstrip. Touted as the “thrill capital of the Southeast”, Carowinds Amusement Park has 13 coasters and a 34,000 square foot wave pool. After an exciting day of sightseeing, hungry vacationers can find restaurants to tantalize taste buds with everything from Southern fried chicken to Mediterranean hummus.
Named after a queen, Charlotte is North Carolina’s jewel city.
